As the world prepares for COP16, the CBD Women’s Caucus is leading the charge to ensure gender justice is a central focus in global biodiversity negotiations. To support this mission, the Caucus hosted a COP16 Flash Training, a three-part virtual series aimed at empowering women and allies with the knowledge and skills needed to actively participate in the upcoming negotiations.
Training overview
The sessions, held throughout August and September, 2024, provided participants with an in-depth understanding of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) framework, its decision-making processes, and the critical role of gender justice in these negotiations. The training addressed several key topics, including:
Participants were introduced to the priority areas and goals of COP16, emphasizing the importance of embedding gender equality in every aspect of biodiversity conservation.
The training offered practical guidance on the logistics of attending COP16, including how to obtain accreditation, register for events, and navigate the complex landscape of international negotiations.
The sessions underscored the importance of strategic engagement, providing tools for effective advocacy and coalition-building. Participants learned how to amplify women’s voices and ensure that gender perspectives are integrated into the Global Biodiversity Framework.
The Road Ahead: From Training to Action
With the completion of the COP16 Flash Training, participants are now better prepared to engage in the upcoming COP16 negotiations. The knowledge gained from these sessions will help them advocate for policies that recognize the intersection of gender and biodiversity, ensuring that women’s rights and perspectives are reflected in the global biodiversity agenda.
The training series was not only about equipping individuals with knowledge but also about building a collective movement. The CBD Women’s Caucus highlighted the importance of solidarity, encouraging participants to work together in advancing gender justice within the biodiversity space. This collaborative approach aims to strengthen the voices of women and gender-diverse groups at COP16 and beyond.
