CBD Women’s Caucus At #CSW69

The overlap between the policy, legal, and programmatic actions needed for gender justice and those for biodiversity protection is striking—yet funding and political support for them remain insufficient.

Coming out of #CBDCOP16 (Cali and Rome editions) and now at #CSW69, where the world is assessing 30 years of the #BeijingPlatform for Action, it is clearer than ever that these two agendas must be addressed together.

That’s why the CBD Women’s Caucus is at #UN Head Quarters to:

  • Demand increased ambition from governments and civil society to close the funding and policy gap between biodiversity and gender agendas.
  • Call for the implementation and funding of the UN Biodiversity Gender Plan of Action, recognizing it as a key tool to advance both gender-responsive biodiversity policies and the commitments under the Sphere. K of the Beijing Platform.

As Parties to the Convention on Biodiversity—who are also part of #CSW—update and implement their #NBSAPs (National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans), they must seize this opportunity to bridge the gap between gender and biodiversity policies.
Aligning the national and local implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action with the Global Biodiversity Framework is not just possible—it is necessary.

Advancing data for synergies between gender, climate, and environment

On March 11, 2025, the CSW69 parallel event (Advancing data for synergies between gender, climate, and environment) was held online, with the participation of more than 200 participants. This event was organized in collaboration with the Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), CBD Women’s Caucus, UN Climate Change, UN WomenWomen’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO), and the Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA). It focused on addressing the data challenges hindering the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, with a particular emphasis on opportunities for synergy between gender, climate, and the environment.

Amelia Arreguín Prado, the Coordinator of the CBD Women’s Caucus, highlighted that by complementing official statistics with community-driven data, we can achieve fairer, more effective solutions to the environmental and biodiversity crises. This approach ensures more inclusive and impactful decision-making across all levels.
The recording is also available in Spanish and French.

Fulfilling the true vision of Beijing (and Rio): a whole-of-society approach to gender and environment data

Side event (in person)

Time: 3.30-4.45 pm GMT (11.30-12.45 pm EST)
Venue: CR E, UN Headquarters, New York
Hosted byInstitute for Environment and Development (IIED), Permanent Missions of Chile, Canada, Colombia, Ireland, and Mexico to the UN, CBD Women’s CaucusUNFCCC, UN WomenWomen’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO)Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA)

The impacts of intertwined crises, such as climate change and biodiversity loss, vary widely among women and girls and reveal deep inequalities that affect them differently. Recognizing and addressing this is essential for effective policymaking and moving toward gender justice.

This official side event will explain why a ‘whole-of-society approach’ to data is vital for better-informed decision-making. This approach requires collaboration between state actors, the private sector, and civil society in order to contribute complementary data across different times and scales, enriching decision-making processes.

Recognizing the contributions of non-state actors, including community-led or grassroots actors, in collecting, owning, and analyzing data is crucial in enabling conditions for gender-responsive implementation of the Rio Conventions.

This event will feature perspectives from member states, UN agencies, and organizations that are part of the Gender and Environment Data Alliance (GEDA) and the CBD Women Caucus.
