A collaborative space for peer exchange, coordination, and support under the Convention on Biological Diversity

The Gender & Biodiversity Focal Points (GB FP) Network is an informal, peer-to-peer space bringing together officially designated CBD Gender & Biodiversity Focal Points.

The Network emerged in response to the growing need for sustained exchange and collaboration among focal points working at the intersection of gender equality and biodiversity governance. It is grounded in the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the CBD Gender Plan of Action (2022–2030), and Target 23 of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF).

Facilitated by the CBD Women’s Caucus, the Network provides a confidential and non-hierarchical environment for focal points to:

  • Exchange information, experiences, and strategies related to CBD processes and implementation;
  • Identify shared challenges and capacity-building needs;
  • Promote peer-to-peer learning and solidarity across regions;
  • Support stronger implementation of Target 23 and the Gender Plan of Action;
  • Foster coordination ahead of CBD intersessionals and Conferences of the Parties (COPs).

The Network is not a negotiating body and does not replace formal CBD processes or official national positions. Instead, it serves as a practical and responsive coordination space that supports collective learning, technical exchange, and collaboration among focal points and relevant partners.

Participation in the Network

Participation in the Network is open to officially designated national Gender & Biodiversity Focal Points included in the official list maintained by the CBD Secretariat, in line with Decision 15/11 and the CBD Gender Plan of Action (2022–2030).

The current official list of designated Gender & Biodiversity Focal Points can be consulted here:

Parties interested in designating a Gender & Biodiversity Focal Point are encouraged to do so through the official channels established by the CBD Secretariat:

Other actors — including the CBD Secretariat, civil society organizations, Indigenous Peoples and local community representatives, researchers, technical experts, and partner organizations — may be invited to specific discussions, trainings, or activities when relevant and agreed by the Network.

How the Network operates

The Network convenes regular virtual meetings aligned with key moments in the CBD calendar, with additional exchanges and coordination taking place between meetings through shared communication channels.

Meetings are co-developed with Gender & Biodiversity Focal Points and facilitated by the CBD Women’s Caucus. Relevant actors — including the CBD Secretariat, civil society organizations, and technical experts — may be invited to specific discussions when relevant.

Meeting summaries, concept notes, and other relevant materials are shared with members through dedicated communication channels and a shared document repository.
